An IEEE professional society of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering conducted a Guest Lecture Session for second year ECE students and faculties with the title Evolution of Telecommunications & Innovation in Undersea Fiber Optic Cable System on 26.09.2024 (Thursday) between 09.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. in the Communication lab, ECE Department, Francis Xavier Engineering College. Mr. Nellai Kumar, Retired DGM of Tata Communications, Mumbai was the resource person for this event.

The lecture provided an in-depth overview of the historical advancements in telecommunications, from early telegraph systems to modern wireless networks, and highlighted the pivotal role of fiber optic technology in revolutionizing global communications. Special focus was given to undersea fiber optic cables, their technological evolution, challenges in deployment, and their critical role in connecting continents for high-speed internet and global data transfer. Innovations in the field, including smart cables and network management, were discussed. Also, students have explored future trends and career prospects in telecommunications and fiber optics. About 115 students of II ECE and faculty members of the ECE department benefited from this program. The event was coordinated by Mrs. E. Francy Irudaya Rani, AP/ECE, under the guidance of Dr.L.R.Priya, Professor/ECE and Prof. J. Friska, HOD/ECE.
