The event “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP” was organized to mark World Intellectual Property Day 2025, focusing on the importance of intellectual property in the music industry. It aimed to raise awareness about how IP rights like copyrights and trademarks help protect music creators and their works. The session covered the connection between IP and music, global impacts, current challenges such as piracy and AI-generated content, and the tools available to empower creators.

Key Highlights:

  • Introduction to World Intellectual Property Day: World Intellectual Property Day, established by WIPO in 2000, celebrates the role that IP rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity. The 2025 theme, “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP,” explores how intellectual property supports music creators and the industry.
  • Intellectual Property: The speaker provided a comprehensive overview of Intellectual Property (IP), explaining that it includes copyrights, trademarks, patents, and trade secrets. He emphasized the importance of protecting creative works and outlined how creators can benefit from their intellectual property. He explained how musicians use IP rights to safeguard their songs, performances, and recordings, highlighting how copyright and licensing enable fair distribution and compensation for their work. The speaker also discussed the global impact of IP, citing examples such as K-pop and Afrobeat, which have successfully used IP protections to reach international audiences. He stressed that artists rely on IP to maintain control over their creations, ensuring that they receive due recognition and rewards. In addition, he addressed some of the key challenges in the music industry, including piracy, unauthorized streaming, and the complexities surrounding AI-generated music. He also noted that many artists face difficulties in receiving fair royalties from streaming platforms. To empower creators, the speaker highlighted the availability of IP tools, educational resources, and platforms that assist artists in protecting and monetizing their music. He acknowledged the support provided by organizations such as WIPO, which offer legal and business guidance to creators worldwide.
  • Conclusion: The speaker urged participants to support original music, respect intellectual property rights, and actively promote awareness of copyrights in their communities. The seminar offered valuable insights into the intersection of IP and music, fostering a deeper appreciation for the legal frameworks that protect creative expression.
