KANYAKUMARI SUNSET / SUNRISE

2021-09-21

At the southernmost part of India is located the town of Kanyakumari, where India concludes its boundaries, almost gracefully, surrounded by the mighty Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Bay of Bengal – from all its directions. Known for its mesmerizing sunrises and sunsets, Kanyakumari entertains thousands of Indian tourists every day. But when it comes to the life of locals living there, everything becomes much usual and far more ordinary.

In most of the cities, you can either see sunrise or sunset in the sea but in Kanyakumari, it is possible to see both in the sea. The Kanyakumari sunrise is spectacular with Vivekanand rock and Tiruvalluvar statue in forefront of the rising sun.

There is so much spoken and written about sunrise in Kanyakumari that it becomes one of the most experience things at the southern tip of India. Though you can watch the sunrise in Kanyakumari from anywhere still there are few designated areas from where it looks spectacular.

Kanyakumari is at the southernmost end of the mainland of India in the state of Tamilnadu. Kanyakumari shares its border with Kerala. At Kanyakumari, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meet. The confluence of three seas is referred to as ‘Thriveni Sangamam’. Sunrise is the most popular activity in Kanyakumari. Vivekanand rock memorial and Thiruvalluvar statue are iconic monuments that add to the beauty of this.

To get the maximum pleasure of viewing the sunrise and the sunset, you must be at the right spots. The most popular one is definitely the Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial. You can take a ferry to reach the rock. It is not just the view from the top but the entire environment at the spot that is magical enough to compel you to spend quite a few hours there. There are several food stalls and shops out there but all you will probably look forward to is capturing the beautiful sunrise/sunset as best as you can.

Although the views of the sunrise and the sunset are rather too beautiful throughout the year, there are specific times when you can get the best views. Ideally, you should visit Kanyakumari from November to January when the weather is extremely pleasant and the sky is clear. If watching the sunrise/sunset is your priority, it is better to avoid the rainy seasons when the view can get a little unclear due to clouds and precipitation.
