On 17th April, 2024 a “Discussion on Geographical Indications (GI) tag products in southern Tamil Nadu and its Entrepreneurial Avenues” was organized by Entrepreneurship Development Cell & Institution’s Innovation Council in association with the Department of Mechanical Engineering on 17th April, 2024 at 01:30 pm to 04.30 pm. 40 students and 1 staff member participated in program. Mr.S.Rakesh, AP/MECH coordinated the session.
The resource person started his speech with the explanation of Geographical Indication and the significance of GI tags. Next he discussed about the importance of preserving the unique characteristics and reputation of GI-tagged products. Then he talked about the identification of GI-tagged products specific to the southern region of Tamilnadu as well as discussion on the historical and cultural significance of these products. Regarding entrepreneurship he shared what are the entrepreneurial avenues based on GI-tagged products, what are the challenges and opportunities for entrepreneurs in leveraging GI tags for business and what are the strategies for promoting entrepreneurship in the southern region of Tamilnadu through GI tagged products.
He discussed the existing policies supporting GI-tagged products and delivered suggestions for enhancing the regulatory framework to better facilitate entrepreneurship and deliberated the role of government and other stakeholders in promoting GI-tagged products. Additionally he revealed the examples of successful collaborations in other regions and their lessons for southern Tamilnadu. Finally he discussed the vision for the future of GI-tagged products in southern Tamilnadu, potential areas for growth and innovation and long term sustainability measures for preserving the authenticity and quality of GI-tagged products. The session went on well and the participants interacted with the guest speaker.
