Expert talk on Potential Avenues for Startup in Civil Engineering

On 30.09.2023 an expert talk on “Potential Avenues for Startup in Civil Engineering” was organized by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell and IIC in association with the department of Civil Engineering from 1.30 PM to 3.30 PM. The resource person for the session was Mr. A. Sumil Kumaran, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Francis Xavier Engineering College, Tirunelveli. 42 Civil engineering students and 1 faculty attended the programme. The programme was coordinated by Mrs. P.Raja Priya, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Francis Xavier Engineering College.

The speaker explained the meaning of startup and the process of developing the startup with live examples which created the interest to the participants to know more about the startup opportunities. The guest speaker being the Civil Engineer, he explained the various opportunities in the civil engineering sector. He also highlighted the technological advancement in the technological advancement such as the integration of digital technologies, such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), photovoltaic glaze (BIPV), Kinetic footfall and Self-healing Concrete and Construction Management Software, has revolutionized the industry, offering increased efficiency and cost savings for startups.

He also stated that besides proper planning, scheduling of work is also a very essential aspect to get success in this field. He highlighted various entrepreneurial aspects such as building planner, civil contractor and sub-contractor, consultant, quantity surveyor, material supplier, labour contractor, real estate marketing agent and surveyor. He emphasized on the importance of funding and also explained the types of funding in detail including the risk factors, the threshold of commitment, involvement in decision making, sources and return to investor involved in it. The participants raised few questions which were answered by the speaker with live examples. Feedback was collected from the students at the end of the session.
