On 27th April, 2023 Entrepreneurship Development Cell & Institution’s Innovation Council in association with the Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an expert talk on “Intellectual Property Rights with special reference to Trademark and Copyrights” from 09:30 pm to 12.30 pm. The program was held via online mode. Mr.C.R.T.Suria Prakash, AP/Civil SCAD College of Engineering & Technology, Tirunelveli was the resource person. 40 students of the Mechanical Engineering department and 1 faculty member participated in the program. Dr.R.K.A.Bhalaji, AP/Mech coordinated the program.

The resource person explained the meaning of Intellectual Property and the rights of the owner of the intellectual property. He also explained the meaning of trade marks, patents, copy rights, design and geographical indication. While explaining various types of intellectual properties, he highlighted the need for protecting the right to use the intellectual properties. The speaker explained in detail the trademarks and copy rights. He said trademarks are important because they serve as a unique marker of identity. and the consumer connects it with a company. It could be the name on the logo, the design, and the colour. He also said that trademark can convey a certain standard and quality of the product that consumers can easily identify. Another perk that trademark registration offers is safeguarding the reputation of a company and it signifies to consumers that a product is of a certain standard and quality to the wider consumer set

As regards the copyright he said that it is important as it helps to protect the value of an author/academic/researchers work, by giving the originator of the work the ability to protect it from unlicensed or uncredited usage. Moreover, It protects from unauthorized use and it provides legal remedies to the owner of the copyright against unauthorized use or reproduction of the work which would be considered as a copyright infringement. The speaker gave live examples while explaining the concept of trademarks and copy rights. The participants also raised few questions to clarify their doubts. The entire session was interactive one and all the participants benefitted a lot through this session.
