On 25.08.2022 a guest talk on “IPR relating to Trademarks and Copyrights at the Early Stages of Innovation” was organized by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell and IIC in association with the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. The Session was handled by Prof. Dr. N. MUTHUKUMARAN, Professor in-charge of Patent Information Centre, TNSCST, Francis Xavier Engineering College from 1.20 - 3.00 PM. The session was presided by Mr Amarsingh Feroz Assistant HOD/ECE and jointly coordinated by IIC Convener Dr. R Prem Ananth, IIC Innovation Ambassador for "Design thinking & Innovations", Assistant professor, Francis Xavier Engineering College.

The speaker explained the IPR related terms such as patents, copyrights, trademarks and geographical indications. As the resource person is in-charge of Patent Information Centre and published more than 10 patents, he shared his personal experiences relating to patents to the students. He also explained the legal formalities and the procedures involved in the patent filing. After giving brief explanation about patent, he explained the meaning of Trade Marks and Copyrights.

The resource person said that the trademark is a word, symbol, design, or phrase that denotes a specific product and differentiates it from similar products whereas, the Copyrights protect “original works of authorship,” such as writings, art, architecture, and music. Regarding the duration of validity the trademark registration is valid for 10 years which can be renewed to protect it from infringers. Whereas, copyright is valid for a lifetime. For an individual owner, the term of copyright is the lifetime of the author plus 60 years. He also gave few examples of copyright works such as novel, poem, photograph, movie, Lyrics to a song, musical composition in the form of sheet music, sound recording, painting etc.,

The students and staff gained the knowledge about Trademarks and Copyrights and raised few questions about the trademarks and copyrights. 51 students and 4 staff members participated in the program and benefitted a lot.
