The program started with the welcome address by Dr John Kennedy, Professor Admission, he said Millets are good source of protein, fiber, vitamins, copper, manganese, phosphorus, magnesium and minerals. He also said the potential health benefits of millet include protecting cardiovascular health, preventing the onset of diabetes, helping people achieve and maintain a healthy weight, and managing inflammation in the gut. After the welcome address Dr. S. Cletus Babu Chairman of Francis Xavier Engineering College, felicitate the gathering. In his felicitation address, he addressed common millet types like Finger Millet (Ragi), Sorghum Millet (Jowar), Pearl Millet (Bajra) and Little Millet (Sama) and its health benefits. He also said that millet based biscuits, cakes and snacks are becoming very common among people and people are buying millet based products for high fibre content.

M. Appavu, Speaker of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly started his speech by explaining the health benefits of millets and he started to highlight the Government support for millet processing. He said Government of Tamilnadu started “Tamil Nadu Millet Mission” under this Mission government provides financial assistance of the Union and State Governments at an estimated cost of ₹82 crore in the coming year. Under this Mission subsidy will be given for bringing fallow land under millet cultivation and crop diversification in 50,000 acres. In this mission Millet farmers will be brought together to form producer groups, for the conduct of training programs. Subsidy will be provided for the installation of sprinkler irrigation systems on 12,500 acres and for establishment of Millets Processing Centres by farmer producer groups. Mrs Jerina Bubby, Assistant Director, MSME Tirunelveli started her presentation by highlighting the entrepreneurship opportunities in millet processing. She Said government had allocated Rs 300 Crores for promoting millet based products. She addressed the gather by highlighting few startup opportunities in Millet Primary Processing Unit, Millets Value Addition, Millet Business Plan for Millet Seed Entrepreneurs, Millet Business Plan for Millets Aggregators, Millet Business Plan – Millets packaging for Supermarkets and the Retail Industry, Millet Business Plan for Bakery Industry (Biscuits and Cakes), Millet Business Plan for Millet-based Hotel Industry, Millet Business Plan for Export Industry and Millet Business Plan – Creating e-Commerce Online platform on Millet Products. On the second day millet exhibition was inaugurated by M. Appavu, Speaker of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, students and SHG groups have prepared millet based foods and they had exhibited. They have exhibited and sold the millet based food products to public and to the college students. The students and SHG exhibited millet cookies, millet biryani, millet based health drinks and many snacks. The exhibition was a great eye opening for the public and the students, so that they can also prepare healthy food product for themselves and for sales.
