The program started with the welcome address by Dr R Prem Ananth, IIC Convenor, Francis Xavier Engineering College. He started his welcome address by explaining the need for this celebration activity World environment Day insisted by IIC. He said that the world environmental day was celebrated to create an awareness among the students about the harmful effects of single use plastic and also to stimulate the students to find an alternate source for plastic. He introduced expert Mr. M. Robinson, Assistant Professor, Science and Humanities, Francis Xavier Engineering College.

The guest speaker started his speech stating the need for the clean nature to avoid deadly diseases. He shared an information about Prochlorococcus bacteria and he said it is producing 5% of oxygen of global photosynthesis. He defined the word Single-use plastic products (SUPs) are used once or for a short period of time, before being thrown away. He said Cotton bud sticks, Cutlery, plates, straws and stirrers, Balloons and sticks for balloons, Food containers, Cups for beverages, Beverage containers, Cigarette butts, Plastic bags, Packets and wrappers, Wet wipes and sanitary items are the single use plastics. He said plastic bags start out as fossil fuels and end up as deadly waste in landfills and the ocean. He expressed that Birds often mistake shredded plastic bags for food, filling their stomachs with toxic debris. He also added certain facts that the plastic typically used in bottles, bags and food containers contains chemical additives such as endocrine disruptors, which are associated with negative health effects including cancers, birth defects and immune system suppression in humans and wildlife. He concluded the session by saying that “Our planet is choking on plastic and It's time for change”. The interaction between the students and the resource person was highly motivating to all the participants. Session came to end with the feedback from the students.
