On 26.04.2023 a Workshop on "Intellectual Property Rights" was organized by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell and IIC in association with the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. The session was handled by Dr. N. Muthukumaran, Professor, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Francis Xavier Engineering College, Tirunelveli from 09.30 AM - 04.30 PM. 41 students and 2 faculties participated. This event was coordinated by Dr R Prem Ananth AP/ECE. This event was conducted with the guidance of Dr. Lourdes Poobala Rayen, EDC Director.
The guest speaker Dr. N. Muthukumaran started the speech by defining the terms copy rights, trade marks, patent rights and geographical indication. He explained the need to file a patent to safe guard the innovations. The guest speaker explained the process of filing the patent, copy right, geographical indication. He also highlighted the protection given by the IPR legally and how it can be used in the business for producing the products without any problem and safeguard the products against competitors’ products.
In the forenoon session, guest speaker created awareness and also explained the types of Intellectual Property Rights. Moreover, he gave number of live examples for each type of IPR. He also explained the design patent with examples such as four arm walking sticks and its types, how each design differs from others. Regarding the geographical indicator tag he gave the example of Salem mangoes and he also said that our college is taking steps to file geographical tag for Tirunelveli Halwa. During the afternoon session he demonstrated how to file a patent through online and offline mode. He listed the application fees for registering a patent and he even said that the Government of India has reduced the application fees to promote Innovation. He concluded the session by explaining the process of filing the patent.
The interaction between the students and the resource person was highly motivating to all the Participants. Session end with the feedback of Students. The Program was coordinated by Dr. R Prem Ananth, IIC Convener, IIC Innovation Ambassador for "Design thinking & Innovations", Assistant professor, Francis Xavier Engineering College.
